Research Experience and Projects

Establishment of a human enterocyte-like cell culture system to study the role of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the regulation of the LCT (Lactase) gene [ January - May 2024 ]

Assisted my professor Dr. Mari Luz Acevedo Santiago with research as a undergraduate research assistant.

  • Extracted DNA from saliva samples of participants.
  • Isolated DNA using previously learned techniques, including column preparation and centrifugation.
  • Prepared gels for electrophoresis.
  • Cleaned and disinfected the incubator for maintaining intestinal cells.


Polymorphisms in the lactase gene and study of the efficacy of commercial lactase [ January - May 2024 ]

Assisted my professor Dr. Mari Luz Acevedo Santiago with research as a undergraduate research assistant.

  • Conducted multiple assays, including gel electrophoresis and Bradford assays.
  • Conducted various studies, including the BIURET test to assess protein content through color change.
  • Performed the Bradford assay with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and protein supernatants, followed by electrophoresis.
  • Conducted silver staining to visualize the concentrations of different lactase tablets.


Effects of Electronic Cigarettes on Sleep Problems Seminar [January - May 2024]

  • Created a seminar for the class "BIOL3909: Integrative Seminar" where I discussed the link between sleep deprivation and the likelihood of using e-cigarettes, along with the neurobehavioral and physiological effects of e-cigarette exposure in preclinical models which I later presented to fellow university students and my professor.


Shadowing Experience [September 2024]

  • Observed Dr. Lizbeth Carillo, a pharmacist and owner of Farmacia El Tesoro, during a two-day shadowing experience. I learned about medication dispensing, including following prescription guidelines and using pharmacy management software for processing prescriptions and managing inventory. I assisted in organizing pharmaceuticals, ensuring proper stock levels, and creating accurate labels. Additionally, I observed patient consultations, gaining insights into medication counseling and the essential role pharmacists play in patient care.
