Job overview

  • Patrol the beach at dawn to identify and mark new nests laid during the night.
  • Assist baby leatherback turtles on the process from hatching to getting to the ocean. We regulated this process of the baby leatherbacks while also giving them space and time to independently climb out of the nest and get to the ocean.
  • Did censuses of already hatches nests to verify that there were no more live turtles. We counted all dead leatherbacks found, unhatched eggs, and undeveloped turtle eggs found in the nest. In the case that live leatherbacks were found they were freed and led to the ocean.
  • Part of the voluntary work was keeping a well organized list of the nests with approximate dates of hatching and when a census would have to be made.
  • We picked up multiple bags of trash while patrolling the beach each week.
  • we would also have to go to conferences in order to educate members of the latest data collected and organize the patrolling groups.
  • Each member of the patrolling group had to learn every part of the identifying, marking, labeling, and assisting during the hatching or census.
