Under Dr. Blanca Fernández's supervision, a Family Medicine practitioner, I had the opportunity to offer two didactic presentations to the Medical Interns of Dr Pila Metropolitan Hospital. The main purpose was to further expand our medical knowledge and display the latest guidelines of Crohn's disease and Multiple Myeloma.
Under Dr. Mary Dowd’s supervision, an addiction medicine specialist, I had the opportunity to see patients with different mental and physical complications caused by alcohol and many controlled substances. Also, how to approach each case individually tailoring the needs of every patient.
I had the opportunity to collaborate in a thesis titled: "Prevalence of Depression and Anxiety in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing". Said collaboration consisted of a questionnaire that was administered through an interpreter in order to determined the prevalence rate within the sample population at Movimiento para el Alcance de Vida Independiente (MAVI).
As a member of the Ponce Health Sciences University Public Health Association, my peers and I gave a workshop about Dengue and Chikungunya at Hogar San Miguel, Ponce. We also participated in a health fair with the purpose of educating the community of Sábana Eneas at San Germán about diabetes, hypertension and how to properly prepare a first aid kit by means of lowering health illiteracy.
This experience involved 200 hours of volunteer work (during the summer) pursuing competencies in relation to the field of public health. I did my Practicum at the School of Behavioral & Brain Sciences (PHSU) designing a program in efforts of reducing depression and anxiety thus improving the coping methods among the population of interest; the program was tailored to population based needs of patients of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
In the fall semester (August – November) of 2013 I did a doctor shadowing with Dr. Durán (general surgeon) at San Antonio Hospital. It was an eye opening experience because I saw a more practical side of medicine, given the opportunity to observe different surgical procedures. Nonetheless, this experience taught me the importance of team work, judgment and decision making, time management and coordination.
I had the chance to observe the psychological aspect that involves being a doctor; treating patients with empathy as well as dealing with low health related literacy with respect and professionalism. Also, I had the opportunity to take vital signs, assist in minor surgeries and in electrocardiograms.
