Regional Epidemiologist

  • Operate as an epidemiological and disease control resource for Local Public Health Agencies (LPHA’s) and other partners within the San Luis Valley region, hereafter referred to as Region.
  • Integrate with the communicable disease activities at the LPHA’s within the Region by meeting regularly with these LPHA’s .
  • Monitor, analyze, and interpret disease surveillance data within the Region, especially the Colorado Electronic Disease Reporting System (CEDRS).
  • Set up new and/or ad hoc surveillance systems as needed.
  • Assess and attempt to improve timeliness and completeness of communicable disease reporting within the Region.
  • Investigate individual disease cases, clusters, and outbreaks of public health importance including conducting case interviews and field investigations.
  • Implement appropriate disease control and prevention measures based on LPHA protocols, the CDPHE Communicable Disease Manual, CDC guidance, and known best practices.
  • Conduct epidemiologic studies (especially for outbreak investigations), including study and questionnaire design, database design, data entry and analysis, and report generation.
  • Facilitate sample/specimen collection and laboratory testing for diseases of public health importance.
  • Write final outbreak reports/summaries for outbreaks in which the regional epidemiologist was the lead investigator; assist in writing the final report/summary in outbreaks in which the regional epidemiologist assisted with the investigation.
  • Be familiar with the Health Alert Network (HAN) system within the San Luis Valley, determine when the system needs to be used to alert partners to a situation that potentially affects public health, and develop health alerts as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain a functional surveillance network among local health agencies, hospitals, clinics, laboratories, the poison control center, physicians, veterinarians, Hazmat teams and law enforcement.
  • Participate in scheduled bimonthly regional epidemiologist conference calls, essential meetings, and work groups hosted by CDPHE.
  • Ensure 24 hour, 7 day a week epidemiologic capacity, including investigation of both usual and unusual disease occurrences in the Region.
  • Maintain communication with the CDPHE Communicable Disease Branch during outbreak and complicated case investigations.
  • Maintain data security and confidentiality per agency policies and procedures.
  • Complete deliverables outlined in the Epidemiology Scope of Work from CDPHE by the stated deadline, and assist LPHA’S in the Region in completing epidemiology-related deliverables in LPHA Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) Scopes of Work as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison with state, regional and local public health partners regarding disease control and epidemiologic issues.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response Duties: Participate in emergency planning and preparedness activities and exercises to provide an epidemiologic perspective in conjunction with local, state, and regional public health staff, as well as other partners (such as hospitals, clinics, health care providers, laboratories, veterinarians, law enforcement, fire departments, etc.).
  • Participate in the Incident Command System (ICS) when it is utilized for public health-related incidents in the Region.
  • Respond to public health-related incidents within the Region and across the state when additional epidemiological capacity is needed. Have an active role in developing, maintaining, and updating emergency preparedness and response plans that involve epidemiologic response.
  • Be familiar with disaster epidemiology tools that can be utilized post-disaster to assess the health of an affected population.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, practicing and periodically updating mass prophylaxis and/or vaccination clinic plans in the Region.
  • Assist LPHA’S in the Region with Isolation and Quarantine planning.
  • Work with LPHA’s in the region to assess regional epidemiologic needs, including plans, training and surge capacity.
